SINCE THIS YEAR THERE IS YOUR LABEL. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF MAKING FASHION OUT OF VINTAGE TEXTILES? On our one-year trip around the world. We were fascinated by all the different kinds of vintage tablecloths we discovered on markets, bazaars and shops again and again. They inspired us to create something new out of them - we called them the pearls of the world, the Worldpearls. With their unique beauty, they reflected cultures, people and, last but not least, fashion traditions. As a result, countless packages of textile treasures were shipped back home waiting for their new purpose. Inspired by these pearls, the idea for the high-end fashion label WORLDPEARLSLOVE was born far away from home, virtually on the street. Back in Berlin everything had changed. We both quit our longtime jobs and went travelling again, this time for half a year through Europe. On the journey we worked on our idea of a sustainable luxury fashion label. We wanted to make a positive contribution to more sustainability by creating new, exclusive unique pieces from vintage materials and by giving traditional materials a new meaning.
TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP AND LUXURY FASHION HAVE UNFORTUNATELY BEEN FAR APART IN RECENT YEARS. WHAT DOES THE TERM LUXURY FASHION MEAN TO YOU? As WORLDPEARLSLOVE we understand luxury in three stages of evolution. For us, Old Luxury refers to the luxury of objects and possessions. We see New Luxury as an experience luxury and the democratization of luxury concepts.
The focus on sustainably produced fashion and the search for purpose in the field of fashion consumption. Our label meets these demands.
With our collection we define the term luxury fashion as NEO or ethical luxury fashion. We create fashion that follows the idea of zero waste and sustainability.
For us, true luxury fashion means being able to express one's personality through individually handmade unique pieces with outstanding workmanship. No mass-produced goods. Wrapping yourself in something special to feel unique and individual. Away from all the mass luxury products that are becoming more and more mainstream today. To be special. Ultimately, to stand out from the large quantity in the luxury segment and not just want to belong to it by buying luxury mainstream products.
UPCYCLING HAS ARRIVED IN THE FASHION WORLD NOT LEAST THROUGH RENOWNED DESIGNERS SUCH AS VETEMENTS AND MARINE SERRE. VETEMENTS, FOR EXAMPLE, CREATED NEW DENIMS FROM OLD LEVI´S JEANS IN 2017 AND SOLD THEM FOR A MULTIPLE OF THE ORIGINAL PRICE. WHAT EXPLAINS THE FASHION HYPE AROUND THESE PRODUCTS? The initial and current hype is probably based not only on the idea of upcycling and innovative design, but also on the fact that Vetements has managed to make a label so profitable in such a short time. One of the highlights of the collection was certainly the cooperation with brands that are otherwise far away from couture. A further aspect is certainly the idea of upcycling, here waste or apparently useless fabrics are converted into new products, as with the Levi's Jeans by Vetments.
WHICH IS THE IT-PIECE FROM THE WORLDPEARLSLOVE COLLECTION THAT EVERY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE IN HER WARDROBE? The T-CLOTH tunic.
ARE THERE OTHER AREAS IN YOUR LIFE/LIFESTYLE WHERE UPCYCLING PLAYS A ROLE? In general, we can say that we have always liked to buy things that are of very high quality, rather timeless and therefore durable. Conscious buying. Things we still would like to part from don't just end up in the garbage. We like to support social institutions and projects in order to make a "second life" possible for the still well-preserved beautiful pieces.
